“The Changeover”
Nestled into the head of the harbour with beautiful views, is this magical house believed to be designed by architect Tom Taylor. The original tiny house was built in 1968 and, as with the Bill Sutton house, nods to the conventions of a colonial cottage with modernist elements. A larger wing was added in the early 70’s and in keeping with the Mid-century Modern movement includes exposed white-painted blockwork, timber beams and window joinery. Rather special and uniquely developed over time, this is a home that lends itself to reflection, creativity and sociability. A house that was designed with specific requirements in mind, which has then stood the test of time and longevity. It was the creative haven and home of renowned author Margaret Mahy.
With 3 or 4 bedrooms (depending on configuration,) the house is designed for the sun, privacy, harbour views and easy access to the outdoors and garden spaces. The kitchen and bathroom are functional but some updating will be required in the near future. The garden has some well established fruit trees, and vegetable beds but in recent years have been left to nature, but the microclimate in Governors Bay will mean that bringing this space back to life will be a joy and a privilege. A tranquil house that offers a harmonious and magical living experience, but with some work needing to be done to bring her back to her former glory.
Governors Bay is a 15 minute drive over the hill from Christchurch city, and boasts a wonderful primary school, cafe, restaurant and a lovely community feel and zoning for Cashmere High.
